Resolution of the City Council
of the city of Union City
expressing appreciation to the
Caravan Trading Company,
James Logan High School,
and Paddy's Coffee House
for their leadership in the effort to raise funds for South Asia
tsunami disaster relief
WHEREAS, in response to the horrific tsunami of December 26, 2004
that laid waste to large areas of Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and
India, killing an estimated 200,000+ people and causing billions of
dollars in property damage, a worldwide relief effort has been
undertaken; and
WHEREAS, tsunami relief efforts are taking place
throughout the United States of America, California and the Bay
Area, raising millions of dollars to date; and
WHEREAS, in the City of Union City, citizens,
businesses and public agencies have taken up the challenge to raise
money for tsunami disaster relief; and
WHEREAS, among the many donors in Union City,
large businesses such as the Caravan Trading Company, which
has donated over $78,000 worth of special baked goods (Meals ready
to Eat) for disaster victims, public agencies such as James Logan
High School, which has raised over $15,350 from students and faculty
and employees, and small businesses such as Paddy's Coffee House,
which has raised over $1500 by donating two days worth of sales
proceeds, have responded accordingly; and
WHEREAS, the City of Union City is accepting
tsunami disaster relief donations to the American Red Cross at all
City facilities open to the public, including fire stations,
community centers and City Hall; and
WHEREAS, the cumulative impact of these various
forms of support from the City of Union City will be to provide
badly needed assistance to the regions devastated by the tsunami.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City
Council of the City of Union City hereby expresses its sincere
appreciation to the Caravan Trading Company, James Logan High
School, Paddy's Coffee House, and all other donors in the City of
Union City who have chosen to support tsunami relief efforts in
South Asia.
